How to Play

Rules

  1. The game objective is to empty all cards from the hand, and is played by four players in clockwise turns.
  2. The player holding the 3♠ starts the first round, and must combine it in their opening play.
  3. The next player is asked if they want to beat the play with a higher ranked combination, or do nothing and pass the turn to the next player.
    • When consecutive passes are made by everyone, the last player who played is free to play again.
    • If he has already finished, the free turn passes to the next player in line.
  4. The round ends when all players have emptied their hand.
  5. The first player to empty their hand earns 3 points, second earns 2, third earns 1, and the last player earns no points.
  6. A new round starts with the previous winner and loser swapping cards.
    • If the loser holds both Black and Red Jokers, no card swapping occurs, and the winner needs to start with a free play.
    • Otherwise the winner should give their least preferred card and receives the loser's highest rank card. The loser then needs to start the round with a free play.
  7. The game ends in solo mode when a player earns 11 points first, or in team mode when a team earns combined 21 points first.
  8. In both modes when multiple candidates reach the target score at the same time, the target score is extended with 10 more points and the game continues until there is only one winner.

The Deck

Murlan uses a 54-card deck: the standard 52 cards plus a Black Joker and a Red Joker. All cards are dealt sequentially and evenly among the four players.

Tips & Strategy

  1. Save your strong cards

Don't play your high ranked combinations too early if you have an overall weak hand. Use them strategically to regain control when opponents are about to finish.

  2. Build proper combinations

Look for scales and flushes in your hand. Playing 5+ cards at once is a powerful move to shed cards quickly. But make sure you're not breaking up a potential flush!

  3. Know when to pass

Sometimes passing strategically is better than wasting a strong card. Let other players battle it out while you conserve your best plays.

  4. Track played cards

Pay attention to which high cards have been played. Knowing that both Jokers are gone changes your game strategy and the value of your remaining 2s dramatically.

  5. Help your teammate

When playing in team mode look out for the plays from your teammate. You should try make him win as well and harm your opponents.
